Today marks the final opportunity for filing a claim with the Victim Relief Fund. After two months of solidarity and effort from Bostonians, including Mayor Menino, Governor Patrick, and friends like Paul Grogan, President of The Boston Foundation, the fund will compensate eligible claimants on a rolling basis beginning June 30, 2013.

The fund has raised $47M to date. This process of community giving is far superior to individual lawsuits under such tragic circumstances.

On a tax note, lump sum payments from the fund will be federal tax exempt. And the fund itself received expedited review of 501(c)(3) status in less than one month to streamline its organizational qualification.
